Contest Rules

Participation & Eligibility

Open to ALL Hartford students in grades 4 through 12, as well as non-Hartford residents attending Hartford schools.

Essay Topics & Guidelines

You may choose either of the following topics:

“Hartford through my eyes” OR

 

“What makes Hartford special to me”

NEW THIS YEAR! In addition to written essays, entrants may submit poetry or visual art. However, all submissions must respond to one of the two topics.

– Essays must be typed on standard 8.5″ x 11″ paper, be a minimum of 400 words and maximum of 1,200 words
– Poetry must be typed on standard 8.5″ x 11″ paper and may not exceed 2 pages
– Artwork must be on paper or canvas not to exceed 18″ x 24″ and be accompanied by a 200-300 word essay relating the work to one of the topics above.

ALL SUBMISSIONS MUST BE ENTRANT’S ORIGINAL WORK, NOT PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED

Submission, Judging & Awards

Each submission MUST INCLUDE AT THE TOP RIGHT or REVERSE SIDE:
– Student’s name, school, grade, age, teacher’s name, complete home address, and contact phone number.
 
All work will be evaluated based on content, creativity, and originality.
Submissions will be grouped into the following categories: 1) Grades 4-6; 2) Grades 7-9; 3) Grades 10-12. Each category will have a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner, and there will be 1 GRAND PRIZE winner. All participants will receive a prize and certificate.
